    The Department of Mechanical Engineering was started in the year 2012 and has highly qualified, dedicated teaching faculty who provide in-depth knowledge and training in the field of Mechanical engineering covering thermal, manufacturing and design aspects to give exposure regarding the latest research, development and techniques taking place in the mechanical field, catering to the growing needs of the industries.

    The department is equipped with modern equipments and machineries as per the requirement of the syllabus of Anna University, Chennai. In all the laboratories and workshops, skilled technical professionals are available at any time to train the students. Students are encouraged to enrich their knowledge by utilising the facilities and resources of the department.

    ENGINEERING PRACTICES LABORATORY

    The Foundry Laboratory - the fundamental of the manufacturing process, casting is learnt in this lab. Students learn how to prepare the mould, the method of melting the metal and pouring it into the mould etc. They become familiar with the tools used in foundry shop, casting allowances, casting defects and methods of eradicating the defects. The process of joining similar and dissimilar metals is studied in the welding shop and students gain practical working experience in arc welding, gas welding - gas cutting and soldering and brazing techniques. Students are given training on plumbing work, electrical wiring and wood working in carpentry shop along with the tools and their usage.

    MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY LABORATORY

    Working in a lathe is one of the major requirements of a mechanical engineer. Students become skilled at lathe operations by performing turning, facing, thread cutting, knurling, chamfering, axial drilling, eccentric turning, step turning and taper turning along with the use of various tools. Lathe Tool Dynamometer which is used for measuring the cutting force exerted on the work piece by the tool in a lathe is available.

    FLUID MECHANICS AND MACHINERY LABORATORY

    In Fluid Mechanics and Machinery Laboratory, flow through pipes, orifice, mouthpieces, notches etc. are analysed by the students to measure the velocity of fluid, coefficient of discharge, and coefficient of velocity. The working principle and performance of hydraulic turbines and pumps are also taught here.

    STRENGTH OF MATERIALS LABORATORY

    Strength of Materials Laboratory - students learn to measure the mechanical properties of materials such as tensile strength, compressive strength, torsional strength, hardness of the materials, impact load etc. from metal bars and bricks to concrete cubes. Computerized Universal Testing Machine is one of the highlighted equipments available in this laboratory.

    THERMAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY-I

    In this lab the performance and emission characteristics of petrol engine, diesel engine and multi-cylinder engine are determined. The properties of petroleum fuels like flash and fire point, dynamic viscosity and kinematic viscosity are also determined. The cut - section models of two stroke and four stroke engines are used to draw the port timing and valve timing diagrams.

    THERMAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY-II

    Thermal Engineering Laboratory deals with the experiments related to different modes of heat transfer i.e. conduction, convection and radiation. In this Lab, students become familiar with parallel flow and counter flow heat exchangers, heat transfer in the composite slab, measurement of thermal conductivity, performance of refrigerators and air conditioners and performance of compressors.

    DYNAMICS LABORATORY

    The working principal and functioning of four bar chain mechanism, slider crank mechanism, governor mechanism, gyroscopic mechanism etc. are taught to the students theoretically in the class rooms are demonstrated to them in this laboratory. Vibration characteristics of springs, beams, shafts are also studied. Force transmitted to the foundation, cam profiles and cam jump phenomenon are experimentally learned in this laboratory.

    METROLOGY AND MEASUREMENT LABORATORY

    Student learns to use and calibrate measuring instruments and equipments. The main equipments in which students gain hands on experience are comparator, profile projector, sine bar, floating carriage micrometer, temperature measurement setup, force measurement setup and torque measurement setup.

    MECHATRONICS LABORATORY

    Students learn to design and test and control the fluid power circuits using pneumatic and hydraulic trainer kit. Students also learn to model and analyse basic electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems using LABVIEW software.

    CAD/CAM LABORATORY

    The CAD/CAM laboratory has been set so as to facilitate the students and enable them to perform analysis on various parameters through softwares like AUTOCAD, CREO, ANSYS etc.

    The Lab is equipped with general purpose computers systems that enable students to write and practice C/ C++/ Java based programmes. The lab workstations have industry standard programming, Analytics, Graphics and Open Source softwares.

    CISCO LABORATORY

    The CISCO Lab is equipped with specialised computers that enable the smooth conduct of CCNA, Security, Cloud and Grid Computing experiments, Internet Programming and Mobile Application Development to the students. The lab workstations have various industry standard Networking Packages.

    Softwares installed: CISCO Packet Tracer, IBM Rational Suite, Visual Studio, Eclipse and Net beans, Andriod Simulator, Java, Globus Toolkit, Open Nebula and Eucalyptus.

    The department has well-equipped, state-of-the-art laboratories that meet the requirements and norms set by Anna University and enable students and scholars to pursue research. Well-equipped classrooms and the seminar hall are added credentials to the department, facilitating hassle-free rendering of lectures, conducting group discussions, seminars and guest lecturers for the benefit of the student community.

    BIO MEDICAL INSTRUMENTATION LAB / DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC EQUIPMENT LAB:

    The Biomedical Instrumentation and DTE (Diagnostic and Therapeutic Equipment) labs are equipped with specialised and general purpose computer based data acquisition systems that enable experiments, involving recording and analysis of signals associated with the cardiovascular, neuromuscular, and respiratory systems. The lab workstations have industry standard programming software like Math Works, MATLAB to filter, process, and evaluate experimentally acquired data, allowing for a more accurate assessment of the recorded signals and the correlation with the biological basis of their origin. The lab is designed to serve as a multipurpose teaching facility to support fundamental curricular objectives that include biomedical engineering concepts and signal analysis concepts imparted in Biomedical Signals and Analysis.

    PATHOLOGY AND MICROBIOLOGY LAB / BIOCHEMISTRY AND HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY LAB:

    The Pathology and Human Physiology labs introduce students to standard biochemical techniques in the context of investigating current and exciting research topics; it aids in carrying out experiments into the mechanisms underlying cell growth, estimation and quantification of biomolecules and separation of macromolecules. In this laboratory students gain knowledge in handling and operating the biomedical apparatus like centrifuge, TLC, ophthalmoscope, microtome, compound microscope and practice on chemical examinations, cryoprocessing and histopathological examinations.
